If you have gaps in your smile, they may affect more than your appearance; gaps where teeth are missing will cause your other teeth to shift to fill the empty space your tooth left behind. This shifting can cause your bite to be compromised, and give you headaches and crooked teeth. If you are missing teeth, you should replace them as soon as you can before your dental health is compromised and you suffer further tooth loss.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a tooth-replacement method which “bridges the gap” between teeth that are missing. The three types of dental bridges include:
Traditional Fixed Bridges—in this type of bridge, a false tooth (or teeth) is fused between two abutment teeth that are fitted with crowns. This type of bridge is permanent and not removable.
Bonded Bridges—this type of bridge is used primarily on front teeth and consists of a false tooth which is fused to metal bands bonded to anchor teeth.
Cantilever Bridges—this type of bridge is used when there are abutment teeth on only one side of the gap. In this procedure, the false tooth is anchored to one side. However, if the gap is very large, we may recommend a partial denture or a permanent implant.
Sometimes a dental implant can replace one or more missing teeth instead of a bridge. At Albuquerque Family Dental Practice we will discuss your options with you and tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of each tooth-replacement procedure so that you can make an informed decision about your oral health.
