Many of our patients have questions about their dental coverage, including what treatments are covered, who is eligible for coverage under their plan, and whether we accept their dental insurance. At Albuquerque Family Dental Practice we stress that you understand your plan benefits before committing to a particular course of treatment or undergoing a dental procedure.
I received a list of dentists from my employer. Can I see a dentist who is not on the list?
You can always see the dentist of your choice; however, you may not receive Albuquerque dental coverage from your particular health plan if your provider is not on the list. In some plans, like a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) program, you may be able to receive benefits from any dentist—regardless of whether or not he or she is on your plan’s list—but you receive a financial incentive to go to certain dentists. However, if you are covered by a capitation program, you do not receive benefit coverage by visiting a “non-participating” dentist.
What does my dental plan cover?
In order to determine what treatments and procedures your dental plan covers, you should ask your employer or union, or you may ask your dental insurance company directly. Generally when you are enrolled in a dental plan, you receive a welcome packet which delineates plan benefits. If you did not receive—or have misplaced—this information, request it from your employer or third-party payer. This information should include what limitations or exclusions you are subject to, as well as the details concerning deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
Who is covered by my dental plan?
The information provided by your employer should explain who is eligible for coverage under your plan. At Albuquerque Family Dental Practice, we may not be able to answer specific questions about your particular dental plan. This is because dental plans—even within the same insurance provider—vary widely and depend upon the specific contract made through your employer. If you have any questions about your Albuquerque dental coverage direct them towards your employer or insurance company.
